Martyrs put in a five-star showing

- By Mike Draxler

MERTHYR TOWN turned around a two-goal deficit at Biggleswade Town in sensational style to secure a big victory at Langford Road.

Following an overnight pitch inspection, the game was given the all clear with the Waders taking the game to their promotion chasing visitors from the off, playing smart football on a sticky pitch.

After eight minutes a throughball found Rhys Hoeness running into the Martyrs box, with him brought down by visiting keeper Oliver Davies.

Hoeness stepped up to covert the penalty and give the hosts the lead.

As Merthyr pushed men forward to attempt to fight their way back into the match, a long ball out of defence found Hoeness who tore down on the visitors’ goal before coolly slotting home his second on 35 minutes.

But the Martyrs continued their waves of pressure, and after successive corners Kayne McLaggon found the net to make it 2-1 five minutes before the break.

It was all change after the break, as the team from south Wales piled the pressure upon their hosts, with four consecutive corners leading to Jarrad Wright powering home a free header at the far post to equalise with 20 minutes remaining.

The Waders then went three at the back and pushing forward in an attempt to retake the lead, but paid the price for a lack of defensive cover as Merthyr scored three times in the final 15 minutes.

The visitors retook the lead when McLaggon nodded home another free header for his second goal of the game.

Substitutes Ian Traylor, three minutes from the end, and Corey Jenkins, one minute into stoppage time, put some gloss on the scoreline for a Martyrs side that now sit fourth in the table.
