HOUSHAM’S ON A HIGH AFTER VILLAGERS CLAIM SIX-POINTER

- By Phil Withers

DELIGHTED boss Steve Housham hailed his North Ferriby troops after their survival hopes were boosted by a precious victory over fellow strugglers Woking.

Reece Thompson netted the winner for the Villagers on 69 minutes after Woking’s Gozie Ugwu had earlier cancelled out Jake Skelton’s fifth-minute opener.

“It was a great performance by all those involved,” Housham raved. “I thought we were the better side for large parts of the game and could have been three ahead before their equaliser which I felt was dubious. We certainly did enough to deserve the win.”

No sooner had Housham settled in his dugout he was celebrat-

ing his side’s opening goal – Skelton rising highest to deftly head home Taron Hare’s chipped cross.

But on 25 minutes, Woking were back on level terms – albeit in controversial circumstances.

Ferriby defender Mark Gray went down after a clash of heads in the centre circle but referee Joseph Johnson allowed Woking to take a quick throw-in resulting in Ugwu bundling the ball home from close range.

Max Kretzschmer was the driving force behind Woking’s best attacks, while Ugwu’s physical presence was a constant threat.

The Cards had the better of the chances in the second half opportunities but could not find a way past home keeper Rory Watson. He saved well from Charlie Carter and was then alert to steal the ball off Ugwu’s toes.

But it was Ferriby who stole the points on 69 minutes when Robbie Tinkler wriggled down the left and pulled the ball back for Thompson to fire a wellplaced shot beyond Poke.

Woking boss Garry Hill accepted defeat afterwards, saying: “It was a disappointing result. The pitch was great leveller. Both goals came from throw-ins and that is something I need to look at. It was their day.”
