‘WE DIDN’T NEED A REF’ , BLASTS BOSS LOCKWOOD

- By Sam Store

GUISELEY boss Adam Lockwood described the standard of refereeing as “unacceptable” as his side battled to a precious point in a fiesty encounter at Meadow Park.

Lockwood’s Lions needed the heroics of goalkeeper Jonathan Maxted to earn a share of the spoils, but it was the performance of Dean Treleaven which turned a satisfactory afternoon into a frustrating one.

“I think we could have played today without any officials” Lockwood said.

“There wasn’t any control on the game all the way through. Both benches were laughing about some of the decisions at the end of the game, but it’s not funny, it’s serious and I’m not sure how serious they are taking it.

“People have paid good money to come and watch the game and it becomes about the officials.

“It’s unbelievable what you see sometimes. Something has to change.”

After thrashing Dover in midweek, the home side would have been hoping for a few more goals in this one, but they instead had to be content with a third stalemate in four games.

Wood boss Luke Garrard was unavailable for comment afterwards, but was similarly in disbelief at many of the decisions that left Lockwood fuming.

It was the home side that had the better chances to break the deadlock, but they weren’t able to add to the five goals they thrashed Dover by in midweek.

Hat-trick hero from that game, Ricky Shakes, had two glorious chances to win it.

The first one came inside ten minutes when finding himself in space in the six-yard box but he saw his initial shot blocked by Ashley Palmer and a second by Maxted. Soon after Wood came close again, with Maxted having to dive down to his right to deny Bruno Andrade’s half volley. Shakes’ second chance was a carbon copy of the first. He had two shots blocked from close range. At the other end, Guiseley only tested Wood keeper Grant Smith on a few occasions. Jordan Preston, who scored their winner against Aldershot last Saturday, forced Smith into a low save after the break and substitute Michael Rankine saw a header go straight into the Wood man’s arms. But, it’s another point closer to safety for Lockwood’s men, who are now unbeaten in four games.
