HAYES DOUBLE SINKS SAINTS

- By Corey Eaton-McKnight

HAYES & Y U 2 ST NEOTS T 0

HAYES & YEADING earned a vital three points on Friday in their fight for survival against all-but-safe St Neots Town, completing their first double of the season in the process.

United’s Sahr Kabba was looking to pass into space but in-form Jevani Brown took the ball from him, ran through and hit the ball across goal.

James Tricks then set up Declan Rogers at the right hand side of the home goalmouth only to completely miss.

With nine minutes left of the first half, David Hutton’s 30yard free-kick reached the St Neots far post. Visiting keeper Alex Archer punched clear, but with his Saints team mates calling for a foul on the stopper, Hayes played on and Connor Toomey caught the ball perfectly on the volley to hit it over his head and into an empty net.

Dead on half-time, United extended their lead after Josh Chamberlain’s corner was headed away by Lee Clarke, only to fall to fellow debutant Leo Donnellan, who headed down for captain Tom Broadbent to finish well on the turn.

Chances were at a premium in the second 45 minutes, although the game saw the return of Hayes top scorer Mitchell Weiss from the bench after six weeks out injured.
