GOZIE MARKS SUTTON CARD

- By David Richardson

GOZIE UGWU’S crucial late winner saw off Surrey rivals Sutton United to give Woking a priceless three points and move them out of the relegation zone.

A week on from their home collapse against Maidstone, the Cards didn’t fold this time after Kieron Cadogan’s fortuitous equaliser cancelled out Delano Sam-Yorke’s early header.

Instead, Garry Hill’s late substitutions came up trumps as Ugwu came off the bench to strike seven minutes from time.

“It was very, very important to win the game and we managed to do that in the end,” a relieved Hill said. “We looked reasonably comfortable at 1-0 up but then after their equaliser we were like a boxer on the ropes for ten minutes.

“A win was so vital. Everyone’s pleased but we’re well aware there’s a lot more work to be done yet.”

Sam-Yorke gave Woking the perfect start after five minutes, heading in from Nathan Ralph’s excellent cross for his fourth goal in three games. Sutton enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half but had to wait until the 62nd minute to break through – albeit fortuitously – when Terell Thomas’ clearance ricocheted off Cadogan and past Michael Poke. Sutton threw everything at Woking, who defended heroically to stay level and recognising the U’s dominance, Hill brought on Connor Hall and Ugwu with 20 minutes left that turned the game. Ralph got down the left and crossed for Ugwu, who beat Puddy to the ball, and turned the ball home into an empty net. Sutton boss Paul Doswell said: “We were very poor in the first half, we weren’t our normal selves. There was a good reaction from the half-time team talk. “We came out and dominated the second half and Woking were a bit unfortunate with the way we scored our goal. Today’s result helps them and keeps us in it. We need one more win to be sure of staying up.”
