Dabbers snatch controversial point

- By Jonathan Le Poidevin

A CONTROVERSIAL equaliser denied Spennymoor Town a deserved win over fellow play-off rivals Nantwich Town.

Curtis Jones bundled home a 64th-minute corner, wrongly awarded by referee Rebecca Welch, to earn the Dabbers a share of the points after Shane Henry had superbly fired the Moors into a seventh-minute lead.

Moors had much the better chances in the game as Graeme Armstrong perhaps should have doubled the lead when he got away into the

area, but blazed over the bar with just keeper Daniel Gyollai to beat.

James Curtis then saw a header from Mark Anderson's cross held under the bar by Gyollai, and top-scorer Glen Taylor hit a half-volley which looped over the keeper but Ibou Touray headed off the line.

Nantwich's best chance of the half came from Tom Peers who wriggled away from Curtis, but Moors keeper Dan Lowson produced a stunning block to preserved the lead.

The tempo slowed down in the second half with Moors content with their advantage.

But when Joel Stair’s shot was sliced wide in the 64th minute, the referee awarded a corner which the Dabbers rubbed salt into the Moors wounds as Ben Harrison headed back across goal for Jones to bundle home from close range.

Despite this setback it was Spennymoor who pushed on and looked the stronger side going for the win, as Curtis glanced a header wide.

And then Taylor turned quickly to drill a low shot inches past the far post when well placed.

In the closing stages, Moors forced a number of set plays and the Dabbers had to defend bravely to earn a very good point, but it ended honours even after an entertaining and hard fought game.
