Tindle turns in for high-flying Birds

- By Colin Payne

LEAGUE leaders Chippenham Town stretched their unbeaten run to 22 matches, ending Biggleswade Town’s mathematical hopes of making the play-offs in the process.

The Bluebirds, who have won all but one of their last 15 games, are now six points clear of Leamington – who lost at home to Frome yesterday – with four to play.

The Waders, who went into this fixture on a four-match winning run of their own, were equal to the home side at times but rarely produced a threat on goal.

Chippenham, the more likely scorers, had efforts from Wil Richards and Jake Andrews just off target.

Former Newport striker Andy Sandell brought a save from Luton Town loanee keeper Liam Couch in the Waders goal as the hosts pushed forward.

The breakthrough came on 39 minutes as after a goalmouth scramble, Bluebirds captain Greg Tindle netted the opener.

And Chippenham may well have been two up at the break as Sandell produced a superb curling shot that beat Couch, only to see it rebound to safety off the upright on the stroke of half-time.

Biggleswade registered their first corner of the game soon after the restart, but the action was all at the other end as Couch denied Dave Pratt.

The visitors countered seeking the equaliser, with a Rhys Hoenes set piece forc- ing home stopper Darren Chitty into a fine save, this being the Waders’ only real shot on target throughout the match.

Chippenham re-applied the pressure and were rewarded 15 minutes from time when Rhys Baggridge doubled their tally from close range.

Couch’s point-blank save thwarted Alex Ferguson, while despite a late flurry of attacks, the visitors were unable to make any impression on the home defence.
