Zebras are in Brigg danger

-

ONE of the oldest clubs in the history of the game, Brigg Town, is in danger of folding.

The Zebras were formed in 1864 and are believed to be the oldest town club in continuous existence and to have played in black and white striped shirts longer than anyone else.

They won the FA Vase in1996 and in 2003, as well as reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup whilst a Step 5 club back in 2002. As recently as 2011 they were in the play-offs to go into Step 3.

Sadly , the club has been seriously mismanaged and is estimated to owe £145,000. I can confirm this as I am not just a supporter, but also an investor and a creditor of the club, although I’m told that chairman Tim Harris denies there is a problem.

The reality is the electricity supply has been cut off again and the club is using a generator. An accountant informs me there are numerous CCJs against the club and a receiver could be turning up any time soon to seize the club’s land as the bank has a charge on it under the Law of Property Act.

Despite my differences with the chairman, I am helping the club out by meeting the players’ expenses for the last ten games of the season despite being on a below-par salary.

The only way out is for interested parties to get together to buy the ground and secure the club’s future. PAUL HAWKINS, via email
