HERE’S CLARITY – YOU’RE SACKED!

- By Sam Elliott

LONG-SERVING Jason Matthews’ Weymouth exit arrived just a day after he went public and asked for clarity on his and the club’s future.

Matthews’ three-andhalf years in charge at the Wessex Stadium was over on Tuesday.

The club are no longer considered one of the more wealthy in the division and have again failed to challenge for the Southern Premier play-offs this season as they have hovered around mid-table.

In an interview with the Daily Echo on Monday, the player-boss – in charge since 2013 – questioned the running of the club and wanted to know if he would have a job next season.

“I was told at a board meeting at the beginning of March that I would be the manager next season but things have slightly changed since then,” he said. “I will look forward to somebody contacting me and clarifying the situation.

“If it’s not to be I would leave with a very heavy heart but that’s for the new chairman to decide and we will see from there. I don’t want to resign but we need to know what's happening.”

Less than 24 hours later, he had his answer.

“The club wish to place on record their thanks for the hard work and dedication that Jason has made during his tenure,” read a club statement. “Not only as a manager but Jason enjoys legendary status at the club as a long serving goalkeeper.

“Supporters will have the chance to thank and wish farewell to Jason when he takes charge of the side for the last time in the Dorset Senior Cup Final against Gillingham Town on Tuesday at the Avenue Stadium.

“This is a sad day for directors and staff who consider Jason more of a friend than a manager.”
