NANTWICH T 3 ASHTON U 2

- By Steve Sharman

NANTWICH Town continued their push for the play-offs as they won at home to Ashton United in what turned out to be a nervy and topsy turvy affair against a determined Ashton.

The first chance fell to the Robins as Lee Knight fired over from close range.

But just as Ashton were growing into the game, the Dabbers went ahead.

Joe Mwasile was played in behind the Robins defence. He calmly lobbed the keeper to put the promotion chasers 1-0 up.

The Dabbers doubled their lead seven minutes from half-time when a corner was missed by Luke Pilling in the Robins goal and it deflected in off the unfortunate Dom Smalley, much to the opposition’s delight.

The visitors came out for the second half much brighter and had a goal back before the hour mark.

A Matty Chadwick shot was spilled by Dan Gyollai and Ryan Crowther tapped in the rebound.

The Dabbers had two good chances to extend their lead when Vinny Mukendi couldn’t turn in from close range and then headed wide when he was well placed and seemingly destined to score.

They did get a third late on when Steve Jones prodded home.

But they were pegged back by an own goal within 60 seconds.

It didn’t make any difference to the result as the Dabbers continued their promotion challenge.

But it was never plain sailing and they were forced to work hard for the win. STAR MAN: Curtis Jones (N’wich) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
