WESTON-S-M 2 EASTBOURNE 0

DAYLE GRUBB took his goal tally to 20 for the season as Weston-super-Mare beat Eastbourne Borough in the Seagulls’ last home game of the campaign.

It was the home side who started the stronger and they opened the scoring with some impressive breakaway play. Danny Greenslade made an excellent run on the left flank and his cross was inch perfect for Jake Reid to head home from close range.

But Weston had keeper Luke Purnell to thank for keeping their lead intact just four minutes later.

Some excellent linkup play between Gavin McCallum and Nat Pinney saw the Sports have their first meaningful attack. Pinney’s shot was destined for the top corner but Purnell tipped the effort over the bar.

The second half started perfectly for the home side as it took them less than a minute to score again.

Grubb burst forward from the half-way line, beating a string of defenders in the process. The midfielder slotted home from close range for his 20th goal of the campaign.

Eastbourne struggled to get a foothold on the game with Weston’s assistant head coach Chris Barker impressing all afternoon.

The Seagulls couldn’t get a third goal but secured the points.
