HUNGER IS THERE AS THE STONES ROLL ON

- By Chris Woods

WEALDSTONE 3 HUNGERFORD 0

WEALDSTONE kept the pressure on seventhplaced Hampton & Richmond with a comfortable victory over Hungerford Town.

Hungerford and Poole will hear their groundgrading appeals by the FA on Wednesday, which currently puts Hungerford’s victors a point behind the next bestplaced team in seventh.

An early Dan Fitchett strike and a Matt Day own goal just five minutes later put the Stones in cruise control.

Joe White rounded off the scoring just nine minutes into the second half but in truth it could have been a far more damaging afternoon for the Crusaders with Lewis Ward making several second half saves.

The pick of the bunch was a reaction save to deny Matty Whichelow from close range on 68 minutes. The Reading loanee also denied Fitchett just five minutes prior with another point-blank save with his leg.

Whichelow will feel he should’ve had his name on the scoresheet. Fitchett played a through ball into the winger who slipped his marker Day, before swerving a shot just wide of the goal when one-on-one.

Hungerford almost grabbed a consolation in injury time. Jonathan North flapped at a corner into the path of Mike Jones, but Sam Cox denied his header on the goal line, flicking the ball over the bar.
