Frickley red card turns the game

- By Phil Matthews

THIS could have been a total non-event of a game with neither side having much to play for but it proved to be far from that pre-game prediction.

Mickleover could not better the 16th place that they had already achieved while visitors Frickley were already relegated and in truth already looking forward to their summer break on the beach after a tough campaign.

In truth the first half had little to commend it although Sports had decided to blood some of their youngsters and one of those, Jake Dickinson caught the eye with his passing.

It was a wonderful opportunity for some of the next generation to demonstrate their class and quality in a tough league situation and Dickinson certainly grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

The game seemed to be going nowhere until the 49th minute dismissal of Frickley’s Sam Akeroyd for his second yellow card offence.

It was a fair enough decision and eventually turned the game squarely in the favour of the home side as they dominated the closing 30 minutes of the match.

With a one man advantage Mickleover seized the initiative. They suddenly started to dominate and created chances to take the game away from their below-par opponents.

Pablo Mills opened the scoring with a deft back heel from a John McGrath free kick on 57 minutes.

The goal seemed to loosen up the home team and they never looked back after going ahead.

Two minutes later Andy Dales doubled the lead with a blistering drive and at that stage it was game over.

Adam Baskerville completed the scoring in the 90th minute to end the season on a high for all the home supporters watching the fine second half show.
