CHAMPS’ DELIGHT DESPITE DEFEAT

GIUSEPPE Sole’s second-half strike settled this tight encounter between’s the league’s top two but Tooting were still celebratin­g taking the title and automatic promotion on goal difference. Despite identical won/lost/drawn records, Dorking knew they needed a miracle to win the league, considerin­g their rivals superior goal difference.

Both teams finish the regular season on 105 points but Tooting are seven goals to the good.

That leaves Dorking looking at the play-offs for the second straight season and they’ll now face Hastings on Tuesday.

Sole scored in the 71st minute converting good work from team-mate Sam Bear.

However, he went from joy to despair moments later when a controvers­ial red card meant he will now miss the play-offs Dorking’s biggest crowd of the season created a great atmosphere and jubilant scenes were enjoyed by the Tooting & Mitcham fans as they received the championsh­ip trophy.
