SOLIHULL MOORS 2 EASTLEIGH Charles-Cook 12, Maye 22 0

- By Colin Stoner

SOLIHULL MOORS manager Liam McDonald spoke of his relief, his delight and his pride after goals from Regan CharlesCook and Simeon Maye secured the win that keeps them in the top flight of the National League.

On-loan Charlton forward Charles-Cook hit a goal-of-the-season contender, taking Jack Byrne’s pass, cutting in from the left and guiding a sumptuous 20-yarder into the top corner.

Maye doubled the lead, forcing the ball home after Byrne flicked on Ashley Sammons’ corner and Moors were never extended. They could have added to their tally, with Omari SterlingJames having an effort finger-tipped on to the bar and Harry White smashing another effort against the post. “Keeping Solihull Moors in the National League was the target when I came to the club and we’ve done that,” said McDonald. “It’s a massive achievement for a small club like us.

“I’d said to the players that though we are not winning the league, staying in this league is the equivalent. The lads have performed really well and I’m really proud of them.”

Eastleigh, who had only two real efforts on goal, were poor and manager Richard Hill suggested that his players had plenty to do to show they deserved to be part of his plans for next season. “It’s not good enough. This is Eastleigh,” said Hill. “I said this week that Eastleigh FC can’t wait for the end of the season to come. That’s scandalous as far as this club is approached. “I’ve inherited a situation, I didn’t create this situation. I wish people would realise that, even our own supporters. I’m playing with somebody else’s toys and at the minute the toys I’m playing with are not performing.”
