CLAPHAM BOWS UNDER PRESSURE

-

SOUTHPORT chairman Charlie Clapham MBE has resigned with immediate effect citing recent attacks on social media and press.

Port fans have been protesting in recent weeks – with a walk-out planned for their final home game with Lincoln City – over the way their club has been run.

It’s been a miserable season on the pitch with two managers Andy Bishop and Steve Burr both sacked and the club suffering relegation from the National League.

Vice chairman Sam Shrouder and directors Haydn Preece and Dave Barron are due to step down at the end of the season.

In a statement Clapham, who is also vice-chairman at the National League, said: “Whilst both Sam and I have personal reasons for resigning our positions, the recent attacks that have appeared on social media and in the press and media following the open meeting of the Trust in Yellow and supporters has meant our position is untenable therefore we take our decisions with heavy hearts but in the best interests of Southport FC in the short and hopefully long term.

“Haydn Preece shares the same views in regards to the vitriol and ridicule that has been aimed at the club and himself, David Barron has been shocked by the behaviour towards myself and the Board.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Sam, Haydn & David and my family for their support towards me over the many years they have worked with me, I would also like to thank Ken Hilton along with all volunteers and supporters who over the last 35 years have treated me with respect.”
