DRAGONS FIRE BACK TO WELSH PREMIER!

- By Carl Field

BARRY TOWN UNITED have been crowned champions of the Welsh League following a 1-0 win at Cambrian & Clydach.

TJ Nagi’s second-half header meant all three points for Gavin Chesterfield’s men, securing them the Division One title with one match to play.

The success caps off a remarkable few seasons for the Dragons – this was their third title in four seasons – and means they will play Welsh Premier League football again after a 13-year absence.

Penybont gave their hopes of finishing second a boost with a 2-1 home win over Gwent side

Goytre, with Owain Warlow netting an 89th-minute winner. In Division Two, Llanelli

Town need a point from their final four games to be certain of the title after their 1-0 home win over Aberbargoed Buds.

Jordan Follows got the goal for the Reds, who are six points clear of Briton Ferry Llansawel. But with Llanelli having superior goal difference, it’s a matter of when and not if the champagne corks pop at Stebonheath Park.

Briton Ferry will promote, however, after Gareth Jones’ 85thminute winner secured them a 1-0 win at Cwmamman United and cemented their top-three place.

The curtain fell on the Welsh Premier League campaign and there was a goal spree at Maes Tegid as The New Saints beat

Bala Town 6-4 in a preview of next week’s JD Welsh Cup final. Scott Quigley led the Saints’ tally with a hat-trick while Ian Sheridan hit brace for the Lakesiders.

In other Championship group action, Liam Thomas’ double fired Carmarthen to a 2-0 win over Bangor City while Cardiff Metropolitan University and Gap Connah’s Quay drew 0-0. In the Conference group, Newtown belted Aberystwyth Town 6-1, Cefn Druids were too good for relegated Airbus UK 3-1 and Rhyl and Llandudno drew 1-1.
