TOM PLANS A WRIGHT KNEES-UP FOR WHITES

- By Steven Coney

YOUNG striker Tommy Wright is hoping to end a dream season on a high by firing Salisbury to play-off glory against Tiverton Town.

The 20-year-old, pictured, kept his nerve on Wednesday night, scoring a 119th-minute penalty as Steve Claridge’s side narrowly beat ten-man Evesham 2-1 after extra-time.

It was Wright’s 51st goal this season, and one of his gutsiest yet, as he stepped up for a second time after seeing Evesham keeper Kevin Sawyer save his earlier spot-kick.

That winner has put the Phoenix club just 90 minutes away from back-to-back promotions and a place in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier.

“Evesham had a player sent off just before half-time, but we didn’t make the most of it and they equalised with five minutes left,” Wright, who has been on a season’s loan from National League side Sutton United, told The NLP. “I was knackered in extra-time and missing the first penalty was devastating. I was expecting somebody to take the ball off me for the second one, but the lads were supportive. The legs were shaking a bit, but I managed to put it away “Monday is going to be a big, big game. Tiverton are a good side and have beaten us twice this season, but I don’t think we’ve had our strongest side out in either of those games. “It’s been an unbelievable season for me, so to top it off with promotion would be fantastic. Salisbury as a club and city deserve to be pushing higher up the leagues.” Tiverton, meanwhile, have done the double over the Whites this season, but boss Martyn Rogers doesn’t expect that to mean much come 3pm tomorrow. Levi Landricombe’s double helped Tivvy see off rivals Taunton Town on Wednesday and Rogers was full of praise for his charges. “There’s nothing better than having a good result against your local rivals and with the season that Taunton had, it was a superb result,” he said. “We’ve improved each season since I came back (in 2014) and this is the best side I’ve had since then and they’re playing well.” On his side’s record against Salisbury, he added: “I think it’s irrelevant. It’s going to be on the day but we know that, if we play well, well give Salisbury a hard time. “Likewise, if they play well, we’ll have a hard time, so it will be a good game to watch.”
