RAVENS REVEL IN DENNIS’ DOUBLE

- By Jeff Bowron

LOUIS Dennis struck two late goals to give Bromley victory in a turgid endof-season affair on Tyneside.

Gateshead bossed the first half without having a cutting edge, but failed to produce a threat on goal after the break.

A drab, low-quality game deserved to end goalless, but generous Gateshead defending was punished by Dennis.

Both were superbly taken goals as Gateshead, who finished eighth, lost their last three home games of a fluctuating campaign.

“We were very poor and it wasn’t a good way to end the season,” said manager Neil Aspin. “We need to be better and if not I won’t be in a job. It’s as simple as that. The manager takes responsibility for performances, but the players have to look at themselves.”

Wes York headed wide when well-placed and George Smith shot past the angle for the Heed, Bromley taking 36 minutes to register their first effort at goal.

Neither side looked like scoring but poor defending 12 minutes from time saw Dennis curl the ball into the far corner.

A comical slip near half way from Tynesiders midfielder Luke Hannant then saw Ravens’ 16-year-old debutant Aiden Enver release Dennis.

Dan Hanford advanced off his line but Dennis kept his composure to neatly dink the ball over the Heed keeper to clinch victory. In a game of little passion three players were booked late on after a flare up, Alan Dunne not one of them when he could easily have seen red.

“Gateshead are a very good side,” said Bromley boss Neil Smith “Dennis produced two great finishes and it’s given us a top-ten finish . The biggest thank you is to the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic all season even through our tough times. Thank you so much.”
