WOOD ADD TO BLUES’ MISERY

- By Neil Turner

GOALS either side of half-time earned Boreham Wood a top-half finish and condemned Chester to their sixth consecutive defeat. A deflected Kenny Davis effort in first-half added time opened the scoring for Wood, with Angelo Balanta sowing the points up after 61 minutes. A delighted Wood boss Luke Garrard reflected: “We went into the game in 15th place today, and we have now come away with a win and leapfrogged four places, which is extremely pleasing. “Our target was to finish in the top half of the table, and we have done extremely well, in my opinion, to achieve that point. “Obviously we will now reflect on the season, but this final placing gives us a great base for planning for the next campaign.” Chester have failed to record a home victory in 2017 and manager Jon McCarthy said: “Obviously we are disappointed with the end to the season, but we attained safety a few games ago, which was our target, so now we plan for next season.” Chester were a pale shadow of the side that had attained a seventh-place position in the autumn. Rarely did they threaten a well-drilled Wood defence, and their best efforts were from close range where James Akintunde and Tom Shaw brought out saves from Grant Smith. Man of the Match, Kenny Davis, went close on two occasions early on, and it was fitting that he opened the scoring 30 seconds into first-half added time, when he jumped on a poor clearance to fire past Lynch from 15 yards, the effort talking a deflection. Angelo Balanta doubled the visitors’ advantage just after the hour mark, cutting inside from the right before firing home from 18 yards. In the dying embers of the game, Lynch kept the scoreline down with saves from Balanta and Ricky Shakes.
