SOUTHERN COMFORT FOR BULLS THANKS TO HORSELL

- By Paul Rogers

HEREFORD have now won four trophies in the space of a year after a dramatic victory against Royston Town. The Division One South & West winners beat their Central counterparts on penalties.

Hereford goalkeeper Martin Horsell saved John Frendo’s spot-kick in sudden death after both sides had earlier missed one each.

Bulls manager Pete Beadle felt that his side shaded the game in a match that lacked quality. “Both teams have had a long hard season and have been hugely successful in their leagues, which I think showed,” said Beadle. “There were lots of endeavour and hard work, but a little bit of lack of quality. Overall, we probably deserved it in the way we played, especially in the second half.”

Hereford had a great chance to open the scoring in the 14th minute, but John Mills failed to get on the end of a Joel Edwards cross.

In the first half, Hereford looked suspect at the back, with Mark Preece and Clayton Fortune making mistakes. However, the Bulls had chances, notably when Mills shot wide.

In the second half McGrath went close for Hereford with a free-kick. Then at the other end, Frendo shot wide after Horsell came charging out of his goal.

Pablo Haysham saw a fizzing shot saved by keeper Joe Welch before Mills hit a post after turning well.

Both sides converted their first three penalties before Hereford substitute Bradley Williams saw his saved.

Rod Orlando-Young then fired his penalty go horribly wide for Royston. Jimmy Oates put Hereford 4-3 ahead before Gus Scott-Morris kept his nerve for Royston.

Calvin Dinsley restored Hereford’s advantage, with the Bulls sealing the win when Horsell tipped Frendo’s penalty on to a post.
