BIG-GAME PLAYERS CAN FIRE ROVERS

-

CONNOR JENNINGS thinks the promotion experience in Tranmere Rovers’ squad could be a big factor in winning the final showdown – and says he can finally say he’s played at Wembley if he gets a winners’ medal. The 25-year-old striker is making his second trip to the stadium having played for Wrexham in the FA Trophy against North Ferriby United three years ago. But a thrilling game ended in a 3-3 draw and then defeat on penalties to the then-Conference North side. Jennings admits it’s made him feel like he can’t count it as an appearance, but knows that can all change today. “To play at Wembley is unbelievable,” Jennings said. “But when you lose there you sort of forget that you’ve played there. It doesn’t really count in a way. Hopefully I can be on the right side this time. “It’s going to be a tough game, obviously, Forest Green are a good side. We just need to concentrate on ourselves and our jobs. “The characters, players and experience we’ve got in the changing room is a massive thing. Players like Steve McNulty, Andy Mangan, Scott Davies, Steven Jennings – they are all big players with lots of experience. Even the younger lads have played lots of games. Hopefully we can put it all together and get the job done.” Jennings is back in full flow after suffering a knee injury that saw him miss three months of the season. A loan spell at former club Macclesfield got him up to full speed and he’s been a regular in Micky Mellon’s side since returning in March. “I missed a pretty big chunk of the season and then coming back from that injury means it’s hard to go into a team challenging for top spot,” he said. “I got five good games at Macc which helped massively. It’s all about playing games. I was running every day and trying really hard – probably too hard at times – but you only get so fit running after training. You need that game time and once I did get it I felt a lot better in myself and that I was able to show what I’m capable of. “But as long as we get the job done it doesn’t really matter. Promotion was the aim at the start of the season and it’s still the same now.”
