NATIONAL LEAGUE IN BRIEF

COLE STOCKTON has bounced back from his Wembley disappointment with Tranmere Rovers to sign for SPL giants Hearts. The 23-year-old striker scored eight goals in his final 11 games for Rovers, only for Micky Mellon’s men to suffer a play-off final defeat by Forest Green last month. But, on arriving to sign a two-year deal with the Jambos this week, Stockton said: “Wembley’s a lot bigger than Tynecastle – but this will be brilliant when it’s full.”

BARROW boss Paul Cox has reaffirmed his commitment to the Bluebirds after he spoke to Hartlepool United about becoming their new manager. Pools, relegated to the National League, were granted permission to speak to Cox but no deal could be reached and they subsequently appointed Craig Harrison. Former Conference winner Cox said: “It is very flattering to be receiving interest from other clubs for both players and myself. However, I have no plans to leave Barrow AFC.”

GATESHEAD received a blow after north-east neighbours Sunderland cancelled the proposed pre-season friendly between the two sides. The Black Cats were meant to travel to the International Stadium on July 8 but have pulled out following the exit of boss David Moyes. The Heed will now host Scottish Premiership side Motherwell instead but managing director Brian Waites said: “While Sunderland have been relegated they would still have brought a good following to Tyneside, so it will hit us financially.”

JOE PIGOTT has made his loan deal to Maidstone permanent, signing for the Kent club following his release from Cambridge United. Pigott was a huge success after joining the side on loan in January, scoring six goals as Jay Saunders’ men pulled clear of any relegation scrap. Pigott, 23, said: “Once I knew Jay was interested, that was pretty much it for me. Knowing how we finished the season, we’ve got a chance of doing really well next season.” The Stones have also re-signed defender Magnus Okuonghae.

EBBSFLEET United have rewarded promotion-achieving manager Daryl McMahon by handing the 33-year-old a new five-year contract. The Fleet were promoted through the National League South play-offs after McMahon took over as manager in April 2015. The Irishman said: “It’s a great gesture from the owner. “It shows great commitment to me and I’m looking forward to rewarding that commitment he’s shown me by taking the club forward.”
