How about a relegation Wembley showdown?

- ROBIN SQUELCH Stockport

I HAVE read with interest the situation regarding the National League’s shake-up to the play-off system (NLP, June 11).

Personally, I don’t agree with the extension to six teams for the play-offs, although I do appreciate that it would make the end of season more interesting with more clubs involved. For many years now, the National League have been campaigning for three-up and three-down from the Football League, so how about this for a system that could work?

I would have the top two from National League go up automatically and the bottom two of Football League go down.

Then, I would have a National League play-off quarter-final which sees third versus sixth and fourth play fifth in a single-leg play-off with the winners of both ties meeting in the semi-final at the higher placed winners’ ground.

The winner of that tie will play the third from bottom team in Football League at Wembley for the right to play in the Football League. That way both parties would have a fair compromise.
