SEAGULLS SWOOP TO LAND READY-MADE REPLACEMENT IN BOSS McGREGOR

- By Jon Couch

WESTONSUPER-MARE already knew the identity of their next manager – even before Scott Bartlett’s shock departure this week.

When Bartlett was handed the reins at Woodspring Stadium seven months ago, he was one of two candidates to shine from an extensive recruitment process.

The other was former Nuneaton, Tamworth and Forest Green striker Marc McGregor, who had a spell at Weston as assistant manager to Craig Laird in 2014.

Bartlett – who runs Forest Green Rovers’ academy as his day job – announced his decision to quit the National League South club this week with his New Lawn role going full-time.

And the Seagulls’ board were in no doubt who they wanted to take over the manager’s hotseat once Bartlett left with the club’s blessings.

So much so, that Weston chiefs made the decision not to advertise the post this time around – and within 24 hours of Bartlett’s departure, McGregor was settling in for his first managerial role.

Chairman Paul Bliss added: “We could not have chosen a better candidate to replace Scott Bartlett and we look forward to a long and fruitful journey in the National League South. When Marc was offered the position he was quick to accept.

“We are confident his appointment will restore

the confidence of players and supporters who we recognise were understandably upset at Scott’s premature departure.”

McGregor, 39, was a prolific striker in his day in the top two tiers of Non-League football, and spent a one-month loan spell at the Woodspring Stadium from Nuneaton back in 2002.

Now, boosted by fans’ favourite Dayle Grubb signing a new two-year deal, McGregor is ready to repay the faith shown in him by the club, insisting it holds a “special place” in his heart.

Speaking to the Weston Mercury, McGregor said: “Management is definitely something I was looking to go in to. I have had some offers from elsewhere, but it seemed the right time to go to Weston.

“I am close to Forest Green so I kind of knew that things were going on at the club and it might have affected Scott. So as much as it has moved quickly, football is a small world.

“Weston is a great club to come to and do well. The players want to stay and have given me their full support. The philosophy of playing good football at the club will continue under my leadership as this stimulates players to enjoy their football and play well.

“The club have shown faith in me and I am happy to come back – this club has a special place in my heart like no other could. The board have backed me and I will return that faith.”

McGregor also revealed he has made offers to keep assistant head coach Chris Barker and goalkeeper coach Ian Harris at the club, adding: “I have spoken to them both and made it clear there are roles available for them. I am not here to ruffle any feathers, I am here to take forward what Scott did.

“I always say to the players it is their squad, because once they get out on the pitch, it is up to them. I am just there to guide them.”
