LIONS AND FLEET MAKE THEIR POINT

- By Tom Feaheny

GUISELEY and Ebbsfleet United couldn’t be separated as they played out an entertaining draw at Nethermoor Park which both managers could take satisfaction from.

This rollercoaster affair saw the Lions take a firsthalf lead through John Rooney, only for the visitors to turn the tables with two goals inside four minutes from Myles Weston and Darren McQueen.

But Adam Lockwood’s men salvaged a deserved point through Reece Thompson’s strike 13 minutes from time.

“It was a good game against tough opposition,” Lockwood said. “It was played in the right way, was end to end, we can take a lot of good things from this.”

Ebbsfleet almost took the lead with the first attack of the game but Sam Magri’s free header was turned over the bar by Guiseley keeper Jonny Maxted.

And the home side made them pay on 16 minutes thanks to a superb goal from Rooney, who fired in on the volley from 20 yards out into the top corner after being found from a corner by Kevan Hurst.

Ebbsfleet started the second-half like the first but this time got a goal as a reward. Good work by Luke Coulson opened up the Guiseley defence and Weston’s shot rebounded off McQueen and flew in.

Four mminutes later, the visitors found themselves in front when the pacey McQueen beat the offside trap and slotted into the right hand corner.

Guiseley looked to have lost momentum before a Frank Mulhern effort was tipped onto the post by Nathan Ashmore and the ball eventually fell to Thompson who scored from a few yards out.

Fleet boss Daryl McMahon added: “We created chances and played some good stuff, we took our goals well and all these factors give us that confidence we need heading into Tuesday’s match against Maidstone.”
