AMMIES ON THE RISE AT BUCKS HEAD

- By Richard Scott

TITLE favourites Salford City know that if they are to win the league this season then they are going to have to grind out results and that was certainly the case as they beat Telford United.

Goals from Jake Beesley and Mike Phenix gave the visitors all three points, but they were made to fight all the way by their Shropshire hosts. Ammies joint boss Anthony Johnson said: “I’m really pleased with it. Really pleased.

“There has been an investment at Telford over the summer like there has been Salford. We knew they had beaten York, but lost to Brackley in midweek and knew we had to start right.

“If we sat deep then it could go against our game plan, but we didn’t.”

It took the visitors only 10 minutes to take the lead when Beesley’s cross beat everyone to find its way into the back of Jas Singh’s net. This was in spite of a good start from the hosts.

Richie Allen had a good chance to double the Ammies’ lead on 25 minutes when he volleyed wide of the goal after a long free-kick was played into the Bucks box.

At the other end, the best chances for Telford came through Jordan Gough on the half hour mark when a cross from Jordan Lussey found him at the back stick, but he headed over the bar.

New Bucks boss Rob Edwards must have had some words with his side at half-time as they upped their workrate in the second half. But they still rarely tested visiting keeper Max Crocombe .

With just 13 minutes left, the points were safe when an Ibou Touray free-kick was floated into the box and former Buck Mike Phenix headed home against his old club.

A disappointed Edwards said: “The lads gave everything. A number of times we won the ball off their goalkeeper and when their defenders had it they gave it back to us so many times.”
