REBELS’ WOE AS SONUPE SWOOPS FOR THE POINTS

- By Craig Phillips

AN Emmanuel Sonupe goal with ten minutes to go gave Kidderminster Harriers a deserved three points over FC United at Broadhurst Park.

Both teams came into the game without a point from the opening two fixtures and despite the home side taking an early lead, it was Harriers who were on top for much of the game and went close on numerous occasions.

The Red Rebels had taken an early lead after Daniel Wisdom found the net for the second game in a row, bundling in a corner which wasn’t cleared by the visiting defence.

But from that point it was the visiting Harriers who came on strong, and just before the 20-minute mark Sonupe grabbed his first of the afternoon, heading past Lloyd Allinson in the FC United goal.

Allinson was a standout performer for the home team all afternoon, with a string of strong saves denying the opposition and on one occasion his save from Joe Ironside fell into the path of Ryan Croasdale who put what looked like a simple opportunity into the side netting.

FC United went close early in the second half, this time it was Harriers keeper Brandon Hall who provided two quick reaction saves to deny the home team.

It looked like being one of those days for Harriers though as chance after chance was either saved by Allinson or denied by the woodwork when they got the better of him, but with ten minutes left Sonupe managed to take advantage from a corner and give Kiddermisnter the three points.

After the game star man Sonupe said: “Despite going down early we always felt like we were on top and the gaffer told us if we kept playing the way we were then the win would come.

“We always believed we would get the goal and kept going all afternoon. Our

season starts from this point now, we’ve been unlucky in the first two games and probably deserved more.

“We’ve got points on the board now and something to build upon.”

For FC United their start of three consecutive defeats is the worst in their history, but manager Karl Marginson isn’t pressing the panic button yet, saying: “I’ve seen enough in those three games to tell me we are better than the results we’ve gotten so far.

“Today we were beaten by a better team on the day, but we showed our capabilities. Credit to Kidderminster for today, but we will just look to go again on Tuesday night.” STAR MAN: Emmanuel Sonupe (Kiddy) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
