Wilkinson shines in narrow win

- By Keith Trudgeon

A GOAL right on half-time was enough to give Stalybridge Celtic a winning start after their relegation last season but it was hard work against a determined and plucky visitor who battled to the end.

They totally dominated proceedings in a one-sided first half, with midfielder Greg Wilkinson directing traffic.

They started the better of the two sides as they dominated possesion and created chances in a positive opening to the season.

He played in Theo BaileyJones only for the youngster to mis-control and squander the chance.

And both Aaron Burns and Jake Charles were played through, only to be thwarted by fine saves by keeper Fabian Spiess.

The goalkeeper was crucial during the opening 40 minutes in ensuring the game remained all square despite the dominance and wasted chances from Stalybridge Celtic.

The inevitable breakthrough came on 44 minutes when Oli Roberts’ right-wing corner was met with a looping header by the impressive Alex Honeyball, which Spiess could only watch drop over his head.

The second half was a quieter affair, with Nantwich enjoying more of the possession but rarely threatening the home goal.

For all of their efforts and energy, they struggled to make things happen.

Their best chance fell to defender Joel Stair who met Jordan Davies’ right-wing corner with a bullet header which flashed inches wide.

Wilkinson was again involved for Celtic, but his driving run down the right was stopped by a superb cover tackle by Casper Hughes.

Tobias Mullarkey had Town’s final chance in injurytime but he blasted harmlessly over from the edge of the box.
