BASINGSTOKE TOWN 1 FROME TOWN 3
FROME got their season off to the perfect start at Basingstoke, having capitalised on their hosts’ poor start.
IIt took just eight minutes for the visiting Robins to hit the front after Darren Jeffries had already created two chances.
Jon Davies’ corner found Marcus JohnsonSchuster waiting to clear at the near post, but the Dragons captain inadvertently sliced the ball into his own net.
The hosts struggled to get a foothold and Frome were two goals up after just 20 minutes as a low cross crept through to Jake Jackson at the near post and last season’s Robins top scorer opened his account this term, swivelling to volley past keeper Colm McAdden.
Basingstoke started strongly in the second half as Aaron Jarvis was bundled over in the box, allowing returning striker Ben Wright to thump home from the spot and halve the deficit just three minutes after the break.
Wright’s goal gave his team a boost and Frome came under pressure.
Both Wright and Shane Hollamby spurned glorious chances to equalise, before Frome scored a killer third goal.
Davies added to an excellent performance by riding his luck to beat two challenges before finishing emphatically into the roof of the net, ensuring a repeat of the result from the same fixture last term.
