U’S HIT LEAGUE SUMMIT AGAIN

- By Tony Dolbear

SUTTON returned to the top of the National League with a hard-fought victory against a Barrow side who were kept in the game by some good saves from goalkeeper Joel Dixon in the second half. Goals from Aswad Thomas, Josh Taylor and Moses Emmanuel got the U’s three points in an exciting encounter. Sutton manager Paul Doswell hailed his side’s performances. He said: “I felt we were in control of the game and had we made it 4-1 we would have been comfortable but it was a little nervous towards the end. However it’s a great three points.” Sutton started brightly, with Emmanuel hitting the post in the first two minutes and Dixon saving from Emmanuel and Craig Eastmond, but Sutton broke through in slightly fortunate circumstances when a free kick from Aswad Thomas evaded everyone to find the far corner of the net. Having threatened little in the first half, Barrow were handed an equaliser when Kieron Cadogan tripped Bradley Bauress and Byron Harrison converted the penalty. Dixon denied Cadogan before the break, but Sutton seemed to have taken control when Josh Taylor scrambled the ball in from close range and Emmanuel tapped in after a fine run from Eastmond. Emmanuel saw another shot blocked before Harrison reduced the arrears, tapping in after Sutton had failed to clear a long Dan Jones throw. Fine saves by Dixon from Eastmond and Taylor kept Barrow in the hunt but they were unable to force an equaliser with substitute Donavan Makoma blazing over a late chance. New Barrow manager Micky Moore was disappointed afterwards but said: “I thought we acquitted ourselves well against a good side and there are plenty of positives to take from the game.”
