WHITBY TOWN 3 MARINE 2

- By Andrew Snaith

WHITBY recovered from losing star striker John Campbell in the second minute as replacement Anthony Hume netted twice.

The Blues' third successive victory over the Merseysiders seemed a long way off when Campbell went over on his ankle early on, but substitute Hume nodded into the bottomright corner, with his first touch, from his right-wing corner.

Matty Tymon headed over at the back post from a right-wing Callum Martin cross off balance on 15 minutes and the hosts doubled their lead when Davey Carson unleashed a vicious Sanchez-esque 20-yarder into the topleft corner, on the half hour.

At the other end, Shane Bland held James Murray's low near post shot and Scott Bakker's effort lacked power.

Bakker went close again as Marine started the second half well, with Tymon charged down from a good position. Moments later, the lively Kyle Fryatt beat two players on the edge of the box but keeper Ben Barnes caught well.

Michael Grogan headed into the side netting at the far post from an acute angle after the hour but Hume looked to have won it at 3-0, drilling under Barnes from 18 yards, who will have felt he could've done better.

However, Bland was left stranded after rushing a backpass straight to Bakker, who slotted home one on one and when Will Smart poked in point-blank, two minutes from time, Whitby were desperately defending but just about hung on for all three points.
