BANGOR GO TOP AS TNS MAKE IT TO LAST EIGHT

- By Chris Smart

WELSH champions The New Saints cruised into the quarterfinals of the IRN-BRU Cup with a top-class display to win 4-0 against the Scottish League Two side Elgin City at Park Hall.

TNS, who reached the semifinals of the competition last season, broke the deadlock after 16 minutes when sharp-shooting Greg Draper produced a thrilling turn of speed and then hammered the ball home.

Aeron Edwards headed home the second goal after a fine cross from Jamie Mullan and Mullan then bagged goal number three just before the interval with a low driven shot giving Elgin keeper Marc Waters no chance at all.

The second half belonged to TNS although they managed just one more goal through Draper, who tapped in for his second of the game. With Saints in cup action,

Bangor City took their chance to go back to the top of the Welsh Premier League as James Demetriou’s debut goal earned them a 1-0 win at Bala Town.

Elsewhere Jack Kenny bagged a late winner for Prestatyn Town as they beat Carmarthen Town 3-2. Carmarthen actually led twice in the game through Liam Thomas and Liam Griffiths while Jack Lewis, Jack Higgins – then Kenny at the death – won it for the Seasiders. The games involving Aberystwyth Town and Barry Town United and Cefn Druids and

Newtown finished goalless. In the first round proper of the Welsh Cup, last season’s semifinalists Caernarfon Town are on the march again after beating

Lex Glyndwr 5-1. Prolific striker Jamie Breese fired another two goals with Nathan Craig, Chris Williams and Jay Gibbs also on the scoresheet for the Huws Gray Alliance leaders.

Matt Harrison had earlier given the visitors a surprise lead.

Joining them in the next round are Berriew who won 4-0 at

Abermule with Richard Davies’ hat-trick inspiring the victory.

Meanwhile two goals from Steve Lewis and another from Jamie McDaid earned Holywell

Town a 3-0 victory over Corwen while Lee McBurnie’s effort helped Brickfield Rangers see off reigning FAW Trophy holders

Chirk AAA 1-0. Cardiff side STM Sports of Welsh League Division Three caused the biggest upset of the day when they sent Division One club Afan Lido crashing out of the competition.

Lamin Conteh was the hero as he bagged a hat-trick to help the Sports chalk up a 5-2 victory. Callum Hajgato and Curtis Scotto were also on target.

Former Swansea striker Lee Trundle once again had his scoring boots on as he netted four times for Llanelli Town in their 6-1 romp at Aberaeron. Ross Jones and Chris Jones also grabbed goals. Pencoed Athletic surprisingly put out Welsh League newcomers Pontyclun 8-7 on penalties after 120 minutes of football had failed to produce a goal. Ammanford Town also needed penalties to see off Aberdare while Llantwit Major were shock 3-2 conquerors of Taffs Well. Two late goals by Rob Jones one from the penalty spot gave them the victory. Josh Morgans got their other goal. A last minute goal by Josh Bull gave Cwmbran Celtic a 1-0 win at Caerau Ely while Pontypridd Town made progress with a 2-1 extra time win over Cambrian and Clydach.
