NOW THAT’S SWIFT WORK!

- By David Ballheimer

HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS are into first round for the fourth time in their history as they blitzed Haringey Borough with three goals in five secondhalf minutes.

Swifts took the lead after just 11 minutes. An attack down the left resulted in a deep cross which Lewis Godbold controlled neatly.

He fired a shot which Valerie Pajetat parried back to him, before his second driven ball was deflected into his own net by Haringey’s Lawrence Yiga.

Haringey’s best chance of the first half fell to Jorge Djassu-Sambu but the midfielder blasted over the crossbar from the angle of the six yard box.

Five minutes into the second half Haringey almost equalised when Jamie-Lee O’Donoghue had a shot which hit the outside of a post.

The leveller came after an hour when Ralston Gabriel slid in to finish off a good low cross from Jamie-Lee O’Donoghue.

The game turned in the 68th minute when, on a quick break, Sam Bantick lost his marker, controlled a through ball and lashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Three minutes later Luke Callander worked his way into the penalty area, squirmed past two tacklers and was brought down by a third.

He picked himself up and made no mistake with the penalty kick. And just two minutes after that, in the 73rd minute, substitute Joshue Fagbohun attacked down the right flank, got behind the defender and crossed low into the danger area where Callander was on hand to tap home.

It took a while for Haringey to recover from those multiple blows but they gave themselves a glimmer of hope with two minutes of normal time remaining when Ruaridh Kay scored from close range after a corner had not been properly cleared.

Heybridge, however, saw out time without any further alarms and boss Jody Brown said: “I am delighted for everyone, especially our fantastic supporters. We won it for them.

“We did a lot of preparation for this game and felt we could take advantage on the counter from the way they attacked.”
