CUP WOES CONTINUE

- By Steve Parsons

STAINES are well placed in the league, but they have lost all three cup ties so far.

The home side shaded the first quarter of the game, in which Elliott Buchanan struck the post with an angled shot and a decent Mo Bettamer shot was well saved by Lenny Pidgeley.

But this spell was followed by a harsh decision against Greg Haydon that would prove costly, and then a goal by the visitors on 29 minutes.

From a throw-in, Chris Sessegnon found Dave Martin, who laid off for Jack Evans to stride into the box and shoot into the far corner.

Evans was unlucky with another shot four minutes later, this time Liam Driscoll keeping it out, but Staines’ task was made harder when Haydon was ordered off.

Margate virtually secured victory five minutes after the restart, debutant and former Staines man Kane Haysman’s ball into the box deceiving the defence, and Sessegnon applying a clinical finish.

A 61st-minute penalty decision against Ben Martin, and the dismissal of manager Draxs Hippolyte, did not endear the referee to “the Staines massive”.

Jordan Chidedozie converted the spot-kick, and despite Buchanan hitting the post again, Margate hung on.
