Greaves inspires a vital victory

FC UNITED responded to a turbulent week off the pitch with victory – and spoiled Dino Maamria’s first game in permanent charge of fellow strugglers Nuneaton Town.

The Red Rebels parted ways with their only manager in their 12 year history, Karl Marginson, on Tuesday but popular striker Tom Greaves took on the role of caretaker and got the three points they needed.

Greaves looked like he had opened the scoring in the first half but his effort was ruled offside, just before Jason Gilchrist took advantage of poor marking to head the home team in front.

Nuneaton came into the game without an away league win all season and they were only denied a way back into the game by several great stops from Lloyd Allinson.

But the Reds increased their lead just after the hour mark as Jordan Fagbola got the final touch after a scramble.

Sub Callum Ball got a late goal back for Nuneaton and despite some close efforts right at the death it was the home team who took the points.

FC United have now lost just once in their last four league games.
