FOLEY IS FINDING HIS WAY AGAIN AT MOORS

- By Mark Carruthers

IT’S never easy for any player to make a jump of three divisions. But that was the task facing Spennymoor Town’s David Foley after he joined the club from South Shields in the summer.

The move surprised many, with Foley leaving the quadruple-winning Mariners for National League North-bound Moors. However, the former Hartlepool United man has made the jump to Step 2 with consummate ease.

He made the perfect introduction to life at Brewery Field, scoring the winner in their 1-0 win over Stockport County on the opening day of the season.

The Moors are riding high in the National League North and sit comfortably in the play-off places.

Foley has played his part, scoring four goals so far this campaign and he was confident that he could always make the step-up from Northern League to National League North.

He said “I wanted to play at a higher standard, I wanted to play against big clubs at Football League grounds”

“I wanted to feel like I used to when I was at Hartlepool United. I think it was the ideal start to my time at the club, scoring against Stockport, who I think are the biggest club in the league.

“It couldn’t have been better, scoring the winning goal and getting a big three points. I was always confident I could step up to this league, I think South Shields could step up to this level.

“I am comfortable at this level, I have played in League One and League Two so I was always confident.”

Foley admitted that he has been impressed with Moors boss and club legend Jason Ainsley and revealed that his enthusiasm convinced him to join the County Durham club.

“Jason has been great” said Foley. “He was so keen, so enthusiastic and so convincing when he was talking about me joining the club.”

Ainsley’s side were tipped to consolidate this season after securing promotion with an Evo-Stik Premier play-off win over Stourbridge to make it three promotions in four seasons.

Now they are eyeing a fourth and one that would take them into Non-League’s top-tier.

And Foley insisted that his side have “nothing to fear” over the rest of the campaign.

“On paper we have performed above many people’s expectations but we were always confident inside the dressing room,” he added.

“We have seen the league, we aren’t just in the opening weeks now, we are heading into November. We have seen the best that this league has to offer and we have nothing to fear.”
