‘WE LET FANS DOWN’ SAYS LAMBS’ TAYLOR
CONNOR TAYLOR says he and his Tamworth team-mates let down the fans after crashing to a Boxing Day derby defeat to Nuneaton Town in a “shambolic team performance”.
The Lambs were humiliated 4-1 by their relegation-threatened National League North rivals after going 4-0 down in the opening half an hour.
Midfield ace Taylor apologised to the fans afterwards who responded to a second straight threegoal defeat with cries of ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’.
Now, the 25-year-old, who signed for the Lambs from Nuneaton in 2014, has vowed to help the fans restore some lost pride when the two teams meet for the second part of their double header tomorrow.
“It was simply not good enough,” Taylor told the
Birmingham Mail. “There’s no way of buffering up anything about that performance. The whole game, from start to finish, it was just embarrassing.
“It’s not even anything to do with the style of play or anything like that. It’s a derby game and it’s about working hard.
“We could be top of the league and they might be bottom, it doesn’t matter with a derby. You have to turn up, work hard and show passion and we didn’t do those basic things.
“It was embarrassing, a shambolic team performance and I can only apologise to everyone connected to the football club. We have let them down.”
Taylor, however, wasn’t the only one embarrassed by the Lambs’ performance, boss Andy Morrell was equally miffed and insisted that changes will be made if the Lambs are to galvanise their play-off push.
“I thought I was embarrassed against Leamington but that firsthalf showing against Nuneaton was by far the worst I have ever had as a manager,” Morrell added. “There was no effort, no cohesiveness, no real desire in a derby game to go and win a ball.
“They chucked the towel in after ten minutes and that is unacceptable. There are going to have to be big changes and if I’m not careful it might be me. Things can’t go on like this performance.
“It hurts me, of course, it’s not good at all. But I am going to be coming out swinging. Our backs are against the wall and so we have got to, there’s no other way.”
