CHESHAM UNITED 4 BASINGSTOKE TOWN 1

- By Simon Newbury

A FINE win over Basingstoke Town has kept Chesham believing in the possibility of a late charge into the play-offs.

After a cagey start Chesham took the lead on 23 minutes, Oran Swales finishing off a well-worked move with a shot into the roof of the net.

Chesham were playing some neat football at times, and on 31 minutes Jefferson Louis turned his marker and squared for Shane Bush to tap home the second.

Basingstoke’s main threat came from set pieces and, from one George Bennett corner, Callum Bunting and Sam Argent both hit the woodwork in quick succession.

But Chesham scored a third by the break, Kieran Murphy heading in after the visitors’ defence didn’t clear a Jhai Dhillon corner.

The visitors came back into the game after the interval and Bennett hit the post with a powerful drive.

Midway through the half a Bennett free kick was saved by Chesham keeper Hafed Al-Droubi but Bunting headed home the loose ball to give the visitors hope.

However that belief was extinguished four minutes later, when Louis set up Bush who netted a fourth for the home side.

This defeat leaves Basingstoke in the bottom half of the table, thanks largely to an abysmal away record – accruing just eight points in 15 games. STAR MAN: Adam Watkins (Chesham) ENTERTAINMENT: ★★★★★
