CLASSY REDS MAKE THE STEP UP

- By John Walsh

NATIONAL League Bromley were grateful for a second chance in this entertaining clash.

Workington had been warned of the visitors’ main threat coming from set-pieces, and it was a 79th-minute corner that enabled the Ravens to force their way level in the tie, skipper Jack Holland coming in at the near post to steer a sharp header beyond the diving Aaron Taylor.

Workington had taken the lead three minutes into the second half with a well-worked goal. Nathan Waterston did well in the area to beat his man and pull the ball back for Phil McLuckie to steer into the bottom corner.

Bromley had started the game well and fashioned early shooting opportunities for George Porter and Brandon Hanlon.

But Workington gradually grew into the game. Waterstone, cutting in from the left this time, skipped past a defender before firing against the foot of the post. Then a low free-kick from Dave Symington flashed invitingly close to goal with several Workington players just unable to apply a finishing touch.

Right on half-time, Hanlon broke for Bromley to create a clear-cut opportunity for Josh Rees, but his first-time shot from the edge of the area was straight into the waiting arms of Taylor.

After taking the lead, Workington could have doubled their advantage when the dangerous Conor Tinnion fired just wide from the edge of the area, while both sides went for it in the closing stages but to no avail, so will have to sort it out on Tuesday night.
