MARINERS STAY TOP OF THE PILE

- By Will Thompson

SOUTH Shields continued their impressive form to stay top of the Evo-Stik NPL North with a 2-1 win over

Droylsden.

Two early goals were enough to secure victory, despite a late consolation from the hosts in the 87th minute.

Graeme Armstrong scored within two minutes of kick-off, blasting the ball through the keeper’s legs.

The league leaders added another after 23 minutes as Dillon Morse headed home a cross.

Droylsden managed a late consolation when Ciaran Kilheeney nodded in a Luke Daly centre.

But the visitors hung on in the final few minutes to retain their position at the top of the table, whereas Droylsden remain in ninth. Hyde moved into the top three with an impressive 4-0 victory over Clitheroe as Dominic Marie bagged two goals.

Tyrone Gay opened the scoring with a flicked header that dropped just under the bar.

Fellow defender Paddy Miller also notched with a bullet header from a corner.

Marie got his first and United’s third when he slotted home a one-on-one, then netted again just over ten minutes later to seal the win.

Kendal Town put five past Ossett Albion, who now sit only one place above rock bottom after a 5-1 defeat.

Ossett opened the scoring through Adam Priestley’s header but Kendal equalised through Charlie Bowman, who headed home five minutes later.

Ossett were reduced to ten men just before halftime when Aidan Chippendale was sent off.

Kendal dominated the second half and Steve Yawson put them 2-1 up.

Bowman scored his second from close-range before Luke Jordan made it 4-1 and Danny Mcgahon completed the scoring

with six minutes left with a well-taken goal as Kendal registered their first win since November. In a mid-table battle, Mossley came out 2-0 winners against Colwyn Bay with Mike Fish opening the scoring after swimming through.

Mason Duffy then doubled the hosts’ lead after Bay’s defence again opened up, securing the victory and closing the gap between the two sides in the league.

Another mid-table clash saw Casey Stewart net twice in a 4-0 triumph for Tadcaster Albion over Glossop North End.

Stewart scored after just 16 minutes after a sumptuous one-two with Aiden Savory to get in behind Glossop’s defence. With a huge slice of luck, Pete Davidson’s shot took a horrible bounce in front of the visiting keeper and went in to double the hosts’ lead.

Stewart then got his second as the keeper cleared the ball straight to him, leaving his goal open for the forward to knock in from 35 yards.

The unselfish talisman then had the chance to secure his hat-trick but instead chose to tee up Andy Milne who slotted it home for the hosts’ fourth.

Substitute Sam Heathcote’s 92nd-minute equaliser saved a point for

Ramsbottom United as they drew 1-1 with Ossett Town.

Martin Pembleton gave Town the lead just after 30 minutes but super-sub Heathcote scored late on to share the spoils in both teams’ fifth draw of the season. Bamber Bridge and Skelmersdale United played out a 0-0 draw after the hosts were reduced to ten men after 17 minutes when Adam Dodd saw red.

Brig were then awarded a penalty but Macauley Wilson’s spot-kick was saved by Callum Roberts.
