SCOTT’S DOUBLE UPSETS CONSETT

- By Jeff Bowron

CONSETT remain second despite a 4-0 hammering at home to mid-table Newcastle Benfield.

Consett’s previous 11 games had produced a total of 57 goals, the Steelmen scoring 35 of them. But they drew a blank against a Benfield side that were three up at half-time and also missed a penalty. Jake Orrell’s eighth-minute strike opened the floodgates, Josh Scott doubling the lead three minutes later. Elliott Forbes made it three before veteran striker Paul Brayson’s penalty was saved by Kyle Hayes. Luke Carr set up Benfield’s fourth, and Scott’s second, of an afternoon to forget for Consett. Leaders Morpeth Town avoided a third straight defeat when they won 3-1 at Bishop Auckland. After a goalless first half, three goals inside 10 minutes, including two from Sean Taylor, saw the Highwaymen home. New North Shields manager Marc Nash got off to a winning start after his side edged an 11goal thriller against Jarrow Roofing. Shields came from 5-2 down at the break scoring twice at the death, with Dean Holmes netting a hat-trick in an unlikely 6-5 win. Dennis Knight was unlucky to finish as a loser after scoring four of the Roofers’ five goals. Nash’s old club Whitley Bay lost 2-0 at home to Seaham Red Star, a goal in each half from Codie Howe and Tommy Scott sinking the Seahorses. A James Ellis hat-trick gave Ryhope CW a 3-2 win over Newton Aycliffe, Nathan Fisher’s brace gave West Auckland a 2-0 win at Dunston UTS. Kyle Downey scored twice for Ashington in a 4-3 win at lowly Washington. Adam Burnicle’s double gave Shildon a 3-1 win over Penrith.
