VASE BEST NOT GOOD ENOUGH AS DUO SACKED

- By Joshua Peck

REACHING the FA Vase quarter-finals and being within touching distance of promotion to Step 4 wasn’t enough for Jeff Lamb and Paul McGrotty to keep their job at Bracknell Town.

The duo were sacked, via email, less than 48 hours after a 3-0 home defeat to Marske United in the last eight of the Vase. McGrotty tweeted on Monday: “At 9.19am myself and Jeff Lamb have just received an email to say we have been sacked by @BracknellTownFC! Cheers!”

It is believed the Bracknell Town hierarchy were unhappy with Lamb and McGrotty’s tactics, which had also seen the Robins fly to fifth in the Hellenic League Premier, with plenty of games in hand.

In the defeat to Marske, leading scorer Adam Cornell was left on the bench until the final 30 minutes, by which time the game was all but over.

Carl Davies has been appointed as the club’s player-manager until the end of the season with Geoff Warner coming in as his assistant. With new figures in the dug-out, Bracknell chairman Kayne SteinbornBusse alluded to fallings out at the club in reference to the decisions made. Steinborn-Busse told

Bracknell News: “They are extremely difficult to reach on the phone. I am really surprised by their reaction to this news as they have openly tried to resign in the past. Three weeks ago they admitted to the board they had no affinity to the club.

“We get nothing from dwelling on the past and we now move on. My priority is the future and we are now focusing on that.”

McGrotty and Lamb had only been in charge of the Robins for five months before being shown the exit door. The pair were appointed after Mark Tallentire left the club in September and reaching the last eight of the FA Vase goes down in club history as the best performance in the competition.

A Bracknell Town official statement read: “Yesterday we made the very tough decision to part company with Jeff and Paul. We would like to thank them for their efforts in their short time here and wish them all the best for the future.”
