TIME IS NOW TO RESCUE STRICKEN ROCKS

- By Matt Badcock

TOMMY SOUTH says there could still be a Thurrock next season if someone comes forward before the end of March – and the long-serving chairman says they will be getting a debt-free club.

The Bostik Premier Fleet will fold at the end of the season if no-one comes forward.

South, who co-founded the club as Purfleet in 1985, put them up for sale at the start of the season just months after they won promotion from Division One North.

Having dedicated his life to the Essex outfit, South has decided to walk away after recovering from cancer and feeling it’s time for change.

South told The NLP: “If someone wants a football club in the Bostik Premier it’s got to be done by the end of March. I’ve just got over cancer and, touch wood, I’m all OK but I just feel I’ve been given a second chance and I’m going to grab it. There are more important things than football.

“I formed Purfleet FC with Norman Posner 33 years ago and it’s time to move on. People don’t want to commit anymore at this level. I admire the clubs who get all the volunteers but that’s not the reason, it’s purely my health.

“We don’t owe any money whatsoever and it’s an ideal opportunity for someone if they want a football club.

“Thurrock can continue. It needs someone to come in and buy – and I’ll ride into the sunset.”
