TERRIFIC TOM AT ROVERS DOUBLE

- By David Groves

TALENTED Tom Neale celebrated his first goals for third-placed Sutton Common Rovers with a brace in the hosts’ 4-1 win against third-from-bottom AFC Hayes. Neale took centre stage to sink their Gander Green Lane visitors whose plucky performance belied the scoreline. The deadlock was broken by Daryl Cooper-Smith who struck home a low drive after only 15 minutes on the 3G pitch. Malachi Thomas made it 2-0 on 31 minutes from 10 yards, although the visitors enjoyed three attempts with only goalkeeper Michael Eacott, to beat although they missed them all. Cooper-Smith and Asa RixonNicholls both had efforts chalked off for offside, while AFC Hayes’ Mourais Jardar also suffered the same fate. After 58 minutes Eacott became the hosts’ hero by saving Ryan Phillips’ penalty, although three minutes later the visitors scored eventually when substitute Spencer Maw reduced the arrears with a speculative cross cum effort which drifted inside the far post. However, that man Neale announced his intentions by opening his account after 71 minutes, restoring the hosts’ advantage. Neale duly completed his double in stoppage-time, finishing superbly over keeper Samuel Szymczyk. League officials sanctioned the early postponements of matches and many were called off on Friday. Westfield lead the top-flight table by 12 points from Bedfont Sports who have played two matches more than the pacesetters. Walton & Hersham fill fourth place, with Camberley Town fifth and Knaphill sixth. Epsom & Ewell remain as basement boys with Farnham Town second bottom.
