GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 4 SPENNYMOOR TOWN 1

- By Rob Hughes

IT WAS a Good Friday for Gainsborough Trinity as they fought back from a goal down to run out emphatic winners over play-off chasing Spennymoor Town.

Andrew Johnson opened the scoring for the Moors, sweeping a fine finish past Hernrich Ravas, against the run of play after Trinity had started brightly.

Gainsborough levelled on 22 minutes, when Alex Simmons found Nicky Walker on the left with a crossfield pass, the winger finding Shane Clarke six yards out. The box-to-box former midfielder set himself before lashing past Moors keeper Dan Lowson.

Trinity turned the game on its’ head when top scorer Ashley Worsfold acrobatically turned home a Walker corner, flicked on by Nathan Jarman.

Visibly buoyed by their lead at the break, Gainsborough again came out of the blocks flying and soon made it three through Simmons, whose composed finish settled the nerves.

Jarman made the game safe with the goal of the game late on. Craig King provided a sumptuous reverse ball to Jarman who took a touch, before slotting under the advancing Lowson.

The home side had further chances to add to their tally, with Walker seeing his low drive parried by Lowson, before Ben Hinchliffe’s follow up was blocked.

Spennymoor were unable to build on their midweek win at title-chasing Harrogate Town, with Gainsborough’s first victory in five a boost to their survival hopes.
