GULLS ON THE CLIMB

TORQUAY UNITED v WOKING

- By David Richardson

IT’S NOW or never for Torquay to start up yet another great escape effort when they host a Woking side in freefall at Plainmoor.

The U’s, third from bottom, claimed a crucial three points at Chester on Friday to close the gap on safety to seven points.

They have a game in hand on Solihull, above them, and are still to play Guiseley, FC Halifax and Hartlepool.

But first they must beat Woking, who are winless in their last eight games, having lost six.

“The most important thing was to go to Chester and get the job done,” said Torquay boss Gary Owers.

“We got the three points and now we need to take that into the game on Monday against Woking. We will certainly give Woking a game, but we know what we have to do to pull ourselves out of the bottom four.

“It’s an important game for us, and after four matches away, it will be pleasing to get back to playing at Plainmoor. After doing extremely well on our away days, we must now replicate that sort of form in our home matches.

“Our home record isn’t brilliant, but those home games between now and the end of the season are going to be really important if we are to get clear.”

Woking were cruelly denied a point by a 94th-minute Macclesfield winner on Friday which has left them three points above the drop.

Despite a promising start to the season, Anthony Limbrick’s side have only won three of their last 25 league games.

The rookie boss remains upbeat about Woking’s chances of avoiding the drop, but knows how important Monday’s game is. He said: “There’s positives, like the effort and desire the players are showing, you could tell the players wanted it against Macclesfield.

“However, if we’re showing those signs we need to be delivering points, and we know that. We can’t be giving away points.

“In other games, like against Wrexham, we should have won 3-2, we didn’t get that. At the moment, we’re putting in heaps of effort and endeavour, but not getting the rewards. This game is so big.”
