BASHED BIGNOT IS FEELING BLUE

VERDICT: It’s now looking bleak for struggling Chester, rooted firmly in the bottom four. It was the final nail in the coffin for Marcus Bignot who will leave at the end of the season

TORQUAY United gave their survival aspirations a glimmer of hope with a comprehensive victory against a woeful Chester side, with the club announcing last night that Marcus Bignot will leave at the end of the season.

Goals from Rees Healey and Elliot Romain earned the victory, but the Devonians will be kicking themselves for not winning by the greater margin that their dominance deserved.

The Gulls boss Gary Owers said: “We got the job done, we came here for three points and got them. The lads are digging in which is pleasing.

“Going in at half-time just 1-0 up, we knew we had to get a second goal and thankfully we got it.”

Torquay got off to an ideal start when Healy took advantage of some dreadful defending by Lathaniel RoweTurner, the striker found himself in oceans of space and had a relatively simple job to score with an angled effort from ten yards.

The visitors doubled their advantage after 66 minutes when Elliot Romain headed home from close range with the home defence all over the place following a right wing corner.

The game was over as a contest after 70 minutes when Lucas Dawson was shown a second yellow card following a reckless challenge just in front of the referee.

Chester left the field to a cacophony of boos from the home faithful, who must be hoping that this wretched season comes to a swift conclusion.

Torquay’s victory piled the pressure on Chester boss Bignot with his side now ten points adrift from safety in a week where the club made the decision on his future with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

And the former Solihull Moors and Grimsby Town boss wasn’t hiding his frustration at the result, saying: “We weren’t at the races, the early goal didn’t help, but the way heads dropped following that setback was unacceptable.

“Conceding so early, from a confidence point of view, it visibly got to the players a little bit.

“As a manger there are some things you just can’t control and it’s frustrating to see them perform like that because they are good players at this football club. Clearly though, we haven’t been good enough today.”
