SHIELDS GO THREE IN FRONT

- By Benjamin Adler

TWO goals from Lee Mason saw South Shields edge a step closer to the title with a come-frombehind 5-2 win over Prescot Cables.

Cables edged ahead inside 60 seconds through a Michael Monaghan shot from just outside the penalty area.

Mason equalised five minutes before half-time, squeezing the ball home at the back post from Robert Briggs’ cross.

The home side had won three successive games, scoring 14 goals in the process, but were left stunned on 55 minutes with another supreme finish from Monaghan.

But Shields showed why they’re leaders, scoring four times in the final 26 minutes through Dillon Morse, Mason, Briggs and Jon Shaw to go three points at the top. Bottom of the table Goole defeated Kendal Town 3-1 as they breathed fresh life into their survival hopes.

The Vikings took the lead with a Nathan Curtis effort that got a final touch off a Kendal defender.

The home side equalised five minutes later when Steven Yawson placed the ball into the net.

Goole controlled the second half and edged in front after a corner into the box was turned in by Derry Robson, who then made it three. Tadcaster Albion thrashed promotion chasers Bamber Bridge 5-0 to end their four-game losing run.

Aiden Savory got the opener, following a lovely one-two between Casey Stewart and Aaron Hardy.

A scintillating flurry of four goals in eight minutes started when full-back Aaron Hardy netted his second of the season.

Forward Will Annan, on loan from Hull City, then took centre stage, scoring twice and laying on rightback Harry Sheppeard’s goal. He was also fouled by Macauley Wilson as Bridge finished the game with ten men.

Colne’s play-off hopes took a knock with a 2-1 home defeat by Ossett Town.

Town took the lead after two minutes through Ashley Jackson’s looping header. Colne struck back ten minutes later when Andy Hollins fired home from a tight angle, but Town took all three points when Nicky Boshell struck on 81 minutes. Meanwhile, neighbours

Ossett Albion beat Skelmersdale United 3-1. Skem had the best of the first half, but the second was totally different with Albion beginning to play better football. Joe Wilkinson crossed for Scott Metcalfe to fire the ball in on 55 minutes.

Marcus Day came off the bench and within minutes extended Albion's lead when he finished from a cross by Aidan Chippendale.

Adam Priestley made it three from the penalty spot, before James Barrigian’s consolation.

Both Droylsden and Atherton Collieries

finished with ten men in their 1-1 draw. Glen Matthews and Luke Daly were shown red deep into injury time for an off-the-ball incident.

Colls had taken the lead just before the half-hour mark when Liam O’Neill slid the ball past Ritchie Branagan.

But the Bloods deservedly equalised just before half-time, Jacques Kpohomouh heading home from Daly’s corner.

Mossley secured only their second away league victory of the season, winning 4-2 win at Ramsbottom United.

The visitors took hold of the contest with two first-half goals in a fourminute spell from Mike Fish and Andy Keogh.

Rams halved the deficit courtesy of a sweet strike from Dean Stott, but the visitors struck back through Jack Tuohy.

Luke Jordan reduced the arrears before Tom Dean settled matters.
