DOSWELL: MACC DESERVE SO MUCH CREDIT

-

SUTTON UNITED boss Paul Doswell knows his side have little margin for error if they are to catch Macclesfield – but says the race isn’t run yet.

The U’s were beating Maidenhead 3-2 on Friday when the game was abandoned at half-time because of a torrential downpour.

Doswell’s side are now six points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

“From our point of view we’ve got to take it a game at a time and finish as high as we can,” he said. “If we can keep pressure on Macclesfield, then great. The reality is they keep pulling it out of the bag and good luck to them.

“It’s not definite we would have gone on to beat Maidenhead because they looked as dangerous as we did. We expected Macclesfield to beat Woking and we expect them to beat Chester but they’ve got some tough games away to Ebbsfleet and Eastleigh – it’s not done yet. We know that from our Conference South title race with Ebbsfleet a couple of years ago. But for us it means there’s no margin for error and that’s difficult.”

He added: “We’ve said all along, and we mean it, the players want to go up and they would cope in League Two. If we don’t, from a club’s perspective, we’d prefer to stay in the National League. That doesn’t stop us from trying our very best. We’ve got a plan in place if we go up but the reality is we don’t want to lose our 3G pitch.”

A televised clash with Bromley, chasing a top seven spot, awaits.

Ravens boss Neil Smith, whose side have reached the FA Trophy final, said: “I’ve said to the boys it’s a great chance to show what you’ve been doing this season,” Smith said. “We know it will be tough, Sutton always are. Dos is doing a great job but what an opportunity. This is beyond our wildest dreams.”
